Digital Lives and Adolescent Mental Health

Course Description

Digital technologies play an important role in adolescents’ learning, communication, relationships, and identity development. Although social media can promote social connection and support, problematic use may be associated with insufficient sleep, cyberbullying, social comparison, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and reduced well-being (WHO, 2024).

This research-based course is designed for upper-secondary school students. Participants will receive systematic instruction and research coaching to develop two research projects with the potential for publication:

  1. Literature review: Digital Lives and Adolescent Mental Health
  2. Survey research: Problematic Social Media Use, Sleep Quality, and Psychological Distress Among Adolescents

Students will learn how to search for and evaluate scientific literature, formulate research questions, design questionnaires, apply research ethics, analyze data, write academic manuscripts, and present research findings. Evidence from the literature review will inform the conceptual framework and selection of variables for the survey study.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing the course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain the relationship between digital behaviors and adolescent mental health.
  2. Search for, evaluate, and synthesize scientific evidence.
  3. Develop research questions, objectives, hypotheses, and conceptual frameworks.
  4. Design appropriate and ethically responsible questionnaires.
  5. Conduct and interpret basic statistical analyses.
  6. Write research manuscripts and present findings in academic formats.
Course Outputs
  • A literature review article with the potential for journal submission
  • A survey research manuscript with the potential for journal submission*
