Course Description
This 45-hour research and innovation course introduces students to stroke prevention, digital health technologies, and the early recognition of suspected stroke. Students will examine modifiable stroke-risk factors and the B.E.F.A.S.T. warning signs before investigating how smartphones, wearable sensors, computer vision, motion analysis, and speech analysis can support risk monitoring and timely emergency response. The course consists of two integrated components. During the first 18 hours, students will conduct a structured narrative review of smartphone- and wearable-based technologies for stroke-risk monitoring and early stroke recognition. They will develop a search strategy, critically evaluate scientific evidence, synthesize findings, and prepare a submission-ready review manuscript. During the following 27 hours, students will translate the review findings into the design and development of Smart Stroke Prevention & Early Recognition, a multimodal smartphone prototype integrating stroke-risk monitoring, guided B.E.F.A.S.T. assessment, symptom-onset recording, and emergency-action support. Students will also undertake preliminary functional and usability testing using healthy volunteers and simulated abnormalities, analyse the resulting data, and communicate their findings through an innovation project paper, prototype demonstration, and academic presentation. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on evidence-based design, research ethics, data privacy, user safety, accessibility, and responsible interpretation of artificial intelligence. Upon completion, students will have produced a submission-ready narrative review, a functional StrokeGuard prototype, an innovation project paper, and a professional presentation suitable for academic conferences, innovation competitions, and health-science portfolios. StrokeGuard is developed as an early-recognition and emergency-support prototype, not as a substitute for clinical diagnosis. Suspected stroke requires immediate professional assessment and brain imaging. This distinction is consistent with guidance from the World Health Organization and CDC. |

Project DescriptionThe Smart Stroke Prevention & Early Recognition project aims to develop students’ competencies in research, digital health technology, artificial intelligence, and medical innovation. It integrates knowledge of stroke with the development of a smartphone-based system for monitoring risk factors and supporting early recognition of suspected stroke using the B.E.F.A.S.T. framework. Throughout this 45-hour course, students will develop two major outputs:
Research Output: Narrative Review—18 Hours or 6 WeeksStudents will prepare a narrative review concerning smartphone- and wearable-based technologies for stroke prevention, risk monitoring, and early recognition. The course content covers:
Students will receive close guidance throughout the process, from formulating the review questions and developing search terms to selecting publications, preparing evidence-extraction tables, synthesising findings, and writing and revising the manuscript for submission to an academic journal. The project will be conducted in groups of approximately 4–5 students. Students will collaborate in searching, reading, summarising, and critically analysing the literature while sharing responsibility for different sections of the manuscript. This approach reduces individual workload and promotes teamwork. Expected outputs
Note: The course fee does not include publication charges, which depend on the selected journal. After the course, approximately two weeks may be required to compile, revise, and prepare the manuscript for submission. The journal review and publication process varies between journals and generally takes approximately 4–6 months. Smart Stroke Prevention & Early Recognition Project—27 Hours or 9 WeeksStudents will translate findings from the narrative review into evidence-based design and development of StrokeGuard, a multimodal smartphone prototype designed to:
The innovation-development process covers:
Initial testing will involve only healthy volunteers and simulated conditions to evaluate functionality, clarity of instructions, assessment time, and usability. Students may develop their innovation individually or in groups of 2–3. They will receive guidance in system design, prototype development, testing, data analysis, project documentation, presentation, and preparation for national and international competitions.
