Research Project X3: Anaphylaxis and Systemic Allergic Reactions

Integrated Medical Research and Innovation Program for High School Students

Research Project X3 is an intensive, mentor-guided program designed to develop high school students’ competencies in medical research, scientific communication, and healthcare innovation through the study of anaphylaxis and systemic allergic reactions.

Anaphylaxis is a severe, rapidly developing systemic hypersensitivity reaction that can be life-threatening without prompt recognition and appropriate management. Through this clinically important topic, students will explore the connections among immunology, emergency medicine, food safety, and public health.

The program integrates scientific knowledge with practical research experience. Students will investigate the immunological mechanisms underlying allergic reactions, common triggers such as food and medications, clinical manifestations, emergency responses, risk prevention, and public awareness.

Through structured instruction and close mentoring, students will complete the research process—from developing research questions and reviewing scientific literature to designing laboratory studies, collecting and analysing experimental data, interpreting findings, and communicating results. They will also apply research evidence to the development of a healthcare innovation.

Program Outcomes

Over 20 sessions, comprising 60 instructional hours, students will develop three major academic outputs:

  1. One Article Review
  2. One Laboratory Research Paper
  3. One Innovation Project for Academic Competition

These outputs will be developed to an academically rigorous standard and may be further refined for submission to academic journals, research conferences, innovation competitions, or medical and health-science portfolios. Publication and competition outcomes remain subject to external review and selection criteria.

Three Integrated Projects
  1. Article Review

Students will develop an academic review article addressing anaphylaxis or systemic allergic reactions. They will learn how to:

  • Formulate a focused research question
  • Identify research gaps
  • Search academic databases, including PubMed and Google Scholar
  • Select relevant and credible evidence
  • Critically appraise scientific literature
  • Synthesise findings from multiple studies
  • Structure and write an academic review article
  • Apply appropriate citation and referencing practices

Potential areas of investigation include immunological mechanisms, IgE-mediated reactions, common allergens and triggers, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, emergency management, and prevention.

Expected output: A well-structured article review with the potential for further development toward conference presentation or journal submission.

  1. Laboratory Research: Food-Allergen Testing

Students will conduct laboratory-based research focusing on food allergens and food-allergen detection. This component introduces experimental research design, laboratory safety, sample preparation, contamination control, data recording, and scientific interpretation.

Potential research topics include:

  • Detection of allergens in selected foods, such as milk, peanuts, eggs, or seafood
  • Comparison of allergen levels in fresh and processed foods
  • Investigation of how food-processing methods, including heat treatment, may affect detectable allergens
  • Evaluation of preliminary allergen-detection methods or commercially available test kits

Students will learn how to:

  • Formulate research questions and hypotheses
  • Define independent, dependent, and controlled variables
  • Design a feasible experimental protocol
  • Prepare and manage food samples safely
  • Conduct experiments and document observations systematically
  • Analyse and visualise experimental data
  • Interpret results in relation to food safety and anaphylaxis prevention
  • Write the methods, results, discussion, and conclusion of a laboratory research paper

Expected output: A laboratory research paper based on experimental food-allergen testing, with the potential for further development toward academic presentation or publication.

  1. Innovation Project for Academic Competition

Using evidence and insights generated from the article review and laboratory research, students will identify a real-world problem related to anaphylaxis and develop an evidence-informed innovation.

Potential innovation concepts include:

  • A warning or monitoring system for individuals at risk of severe allergic reactions
  • A smart epinephrine auto-injector support system
  • A mobile application supporting emergency recognition and response
  • An artificial intelligence system for preliminary risk assessment
  • An educational intervention for schools or communities
  • A food-allergen communication or safety tool

Students will be coached through:

  • Problem and needs analysis
  • Identification of target users
  • Idea generation and concept selection
  • Value-proposition development
  • Scientific rationale and evidence integration
  • Solution and prototype design
  • Feasibility assessment
  • Impact evaluation
  • Poster, abstract, slide, and pitch-deck preparation
  • Scientific presentation and question-and-answer practice

Expected output: A prototype or innovation concept supported by a poster, presentation materials, and pitch deck suitable for submission to an academic competition.

Skills Developed

Throughout the program, students will develop competencies in:

  • Scientific and critical thinking
  • Evidence-based reasoning
  • Literature searching and critical appraisal
  • Experimental research methods
  • Research integrity and responsible conduct
  • Data management, analysis, and visualisation
  • Academic writing and referencing
  • Laboratory safety and experimental practice
  • Innovation and problem-solving
  • Teamwork and project management
  • Scientific communication, presentation, and Q&A
  • Portfolio development for medicine and health sciences
Learning Approach

The program is conducted in small groups so that students can participate meaningfully in each stage of the research and innovation process. Students will work collaboratively in reviewing evidence, planning and conducting experiments, collecting and analysing laboratory data, discussing results, developing innovations, and presenting their work.

Each group will receive guidance from research advisors, laboratory instructors, and innovation coaches throughout the program.

Target Students

This program is suitable for:

  • Students in Grades 10–11 or Matthayom 4–5
  • Students preparing competitive portfolios for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, biomedical science, and other health-science programs
  • Students planning to submit university portfolios from the 2028 academic year onward
  • Students interested in medical research, public health, laboratory science, or healthcare innovation
